Complete Guide to Foundation in Engineering in Malaysia

If your interests lie in physics and mathematics, and you are fascinated by engineering, then Foundation in Engineering is the course for you. Foundation in Engineering is a 12 - 15 month program that allows students direct entry into an Engineering degree.

What is Foundation in Engineering?

  • A pre-univerity program that takes 12 - 15 months to complete.
  • Module covers Fundamentals of Engineering and Physical Science.
  • Direct entry to Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electric / Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Foundation in Engineering is a pre-university programme for post-SPM / O Level students. Foundation in Engineering focuses on core modules students need in an Engineering degree compared to more generalist courses like A Level. Students who successfully completed this course are 'guaranteed' placement in the Engineering Degree course of the same university.

How is this Foundation in Engineering structured?

Engineering Foundation often consists of 2 to 3 semesters within a 1-year period. Students are usually graded 50% based on exams and 50% based on coursework. Students will be taught the fundamentals of engineering, including history and current innovations.

Theory will be put into application with continuous assessment through assignments, group projects, quizzes and tests in addition to final examinations. Other important skills such as effective communication, time management, teamwork, organisational and research skills will also be put to the test.

Foundation in Engineering allows students to progress to any of the following degrees:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Geology
  • Any business or arts programs

Is Foundation in Engineering your ideal choice?

This programme is definitely for you if…

  • You are certain you want to be an engineer
  • You have chosen the specific university to study your Foundation and Degree.
  • You took Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics in SPM / O Level.

This programme might be for you if…

  • You prefer to study something related to Engineering but aren't sure.

This programme might not be for you if…

  • You want to start work ASAP. After completing the 1-year duration for the Engineering Foundation, you still have up to 4 years of undergraduate studies to be completed.
  • You only want basic Engineering but do not want to be a certified Engineeer. In that case, consider a diploma.

This programme is certainly not for you if…

  • You did not study Physics and Additional Mathematics in SPM / O Level
  • You can’t handle physics and mathematics.  Most of your time in this course will be spent learning about theories and doing calculation to solve real-life problems.

3 things to consider when choosing the Engineering Foundation

  • Accreditation. Check the technology and laboratory of the university, as well as ensure it is accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Only 4 year programs are recognised by the BEM.
  • The Engineering fields available. Not all universties have the same type of courses. Since they are many different fields in Engineering, make sure that the university offers the specific course of your choice.
  • Publication. If the university is leading or active in R&D, they will have many current or new publications by the academicians. This will not only ensure that you get top-notch education, but it can also provide you with the best experienced guidance from the top people of the engineering world.

What should you do if you are not sure what to study?

Do your research. What other courses are available? Engineering covers a very broad range of applications and industries. From mining to petroleum, biochemical, software and aviation. Make sure you know what each field has to offer and what career prospect you can look forward to.

Talk to a counsellor. More often than not, talking to an experienced counsellor about your future really helps. They can give you new perspective about the prospective courses and help you make an informed decision about your education pathway.

Consider a more general pre-university course. If you’re really unsure and need more time to think about it, you can consider taking courses like A Level or the American Degree Program (ADP). These courses offer a various range of subjects, giving you an option to study a combination of different subjects before making a final decision. The awards from these courses are recognised worldwide so you can study anywhere in the world.

Do you have to take Mata Pelajaran Pengajian Umum (MPU) subjects?

Effective 1st September 2013, Ministry of Education (MOE) requires all students to complete a set of Mata Pelajaran Umum (MPU) subjects. This applies to all students of Canadian Pre-University (CPU) in Malaysia. The MPU subjects are:

  • Component U1: Malaysian Studies 1 (for Malaysian students) or Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi 1 / Communicational Malay Language 1 (for International students)
  • Component U2: Personal Development 1 or Bahasa Kebangsaan A / National Language A
  • Component U3: Malaysian Arts and Cultures

Entry requirements of Foundation in Engineering in Malaysia
